Lyrics of Shakespeares Sister

Young bones groan
And the rocks below say:
"Throw your skinny body down, son!"

Junge Knochen ächzen
Und die Felsen unten sagen:
"Wirf deine mageren Körper hinunter, mein Sohn!"

But I'm going to meet the one I love
So please don't stand in my way
Because I'm going to meet the one I love
No, Mamma, let me go!

Aber ich werde die, die ich Liebe zu begegnen
Also bitte nicht in meinem Weg stehen
Da werde ich die, die ich Liebe zu begegnen
Nein, Mama, lass mich gehen!

Young bones groan
And the rocks below say:
"Throw your white body down!"

Junge Knochen ächzen
Und die Felsen unten sagen:
"Wirf deine weißen Körper runter!"

But I'm going to meet the one I love
At last! At last! At last!
I'm going to meet the one I love
La-de-da, la-de-da
No, Mamma, let me go!

Aber ich werde die, die ich Liebe zu begegnen
Endlich! Endlich! Endlich!
Ich werde die, die ich Liebe zu begegnen
La-de-da, la-de-da
Nein, Mama, lass mich gehen!

I thought that if you had
An acoustic guitar
Then it meant that you were
A Protest Singer
Oh, I can smile about it now
But at the time it was terrible
No, Mamma, let me go
No...

Ich dachte, wenn Sie hatte
Eine akustische Gitarre
Dann bedeutete es, dass du
Ein Protest Singer
Oh, das kann ich jetzt darüber lächeln
Aber damals war es schrecklich
Nein, Mama, lass mich gehen
No ..

'Shakespeare's Sister' is a non-album single by British band The Smiths, released in March 1985. It first appeared on albums in 1987 via the 'Louder Than Bombs' and 'The World Won't Listen' compilations.

Its title refers to a section of Virginia Woolf's feminist essay 'A Room of One's Own' in which Woolf argues that if William Shakespeare had had a sister of equal genius, as a woman she would not have had the opportunity to make use of it.

Another interpretation of the title is that it refers to the Tennessee Williams play 'The Glass Menagerie' - the Gentleman Caller, who is courting Tom Wingfield's sister, refers to Tom as 'Shakespeare' in the play - and there are other allusions to the play in the song's lyric.

The original single's sleeve featured Pat Phoenix, best-known for her long-running role in the UK TV series 'Coronation Street'.

The band Shakespears Sister was named after the song.
